history
of the port office hotel

The original hotel was constructed circa 1868, and was named the Shamrock Hotel. The hotel was then gutted and remodelled in 1880, and was designed by F. D. G. Stanley and built by John Petrie. The Shamrock Hotel was renamed the Port Office Hotel circa 1909 by a hotellier, Mr Cutbush. This is said to be the time when further alterations occurred to give it its rendered facade and roof that exists today.

Being a heritage listed building, any works proposed for the Port Office Hotel have had to be approved by both the Queensland Department of Environment & Heritage and the Heritage Department of the Brisbane City Council. All renovations and works implemented for the Port Office Hotel, have been sensitive to the historical nature of the existing building and the precinct.

The Port Office Hotel has undergone a remarkable transformation since its beginnings, and now stands as a fine example of contemporary interior design whilst remaining sensitive to its heritage listing. The venue found a new life as an upmarket Hotel when newly renovated and refurbished in 1999, and again recently in early 2009, making it one of the oldest buildings in Brisbane.

The Port Office Hotel is located in the heart of the Brisbane Central Business District, in close proximity to the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, numerous hotels and accommodation and the hub of the CBD shopping district.

Being close to all forms of public transport including buses, trains and ferries, getting to and from the Port Office is easy. Taxi ranks are also located out the front of Fix Restaurant on Margaret St and also across the road on Edward St.

Renowned for its versatility, the Port Office Hotel consists of an award winning restaurant, several bars including Fix Wine Bar, Marble Bar and Liber Lounge, private dining rooms and an abundance of function facilities.
